Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) Systems

Metal Processing Systems (MPS), Inc. is proud to be the sole North American factory representative for Spark Plasma Sintering systems by SPS Syntex, Inc. Headquartered in Japan, SPS Syntex, Inc. are the original inventors and developers of SPS technologies.

What is Spark Plasma Sintering?

SPS is an emerging sinter/compaction technology which makes possible sintering of not only all forms of conventional powdered metals, but most forms of exotic, ultra pure, nanophase, ceramics, composites, polymer-metallic composites, and high porosity materials. Additionally, this technology is capable of sintering like and dissimilar materials, seamless bonding, and material surface treatment. Furthermore, SPS technology does not require a “green” state, binders, or a pre-sintering stage; it’s capable of producing net and near net shapes directly from powder!

This technology’s unique capabilities stem from a high amperage, DC pulse generator, coupled with uniaxial compaction and negative atmospheric (vacuum) pressure using air or various gasses. By generating spark energy between particles during compaction, heat is concentrated uniformly throughout the material. This heat is “ramped up” very quickly, held, and “ramped down” very quickly, netting very little damage and grain growth to individual particles.

SPS systems offer many advantages over conventional sintering systems, including:
•  Precision control over heat, cooling, and pressure
•  Rapid sintering
•  Uniform sintering
•  Single press-full density compaction
•  Low operating costs
•  Easy operation

SPS technology can also be combined with various forms of production and automation systems, including: multi head, rotary, batch and shuttle type systems. Robotic interface is also available.

Our SPS technology can be separated into three categories:
•  Small – Small samples with small machine footprint
•  Medium – Small to medium sized samples – considerably larger footprint
•  Large – Small through large sized samples – much larger footprint
